BIS (CRS) REGISTRATION FOR ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS
The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), is a mandatory certification program for specific electronic and IT products sold in India. This ensures that these products meet Indian safety and quality standards as defined under the applicable Indian Standards.
Under this scheme, manufacturers—both domestic and foreign—must get their products registered with BIS before placing them on the Indian market. Testing is done in BIS-recognized laboratories, and only compliant products receive BIS registration with a unique R-number.

What is the CRS Scheme?
The BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) was introduced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to ensure the safety of Indian consumers using electronic goods. It applies to over 75 product categories including LED lights, mobile phones, power adapters, laptops, smart watches, and more.
Who Needs It?
BIS CRS Registration is mandatory for:
- Manufacturers (Indian or foreign) of electronic and IT products listed under the CRS schedule.
- Importers or Indian representatives of foreign manufacturers seeking to sell these products in India.
- Brands launching new models or variations of certified products.
Key Requirements
To obtain BIS registration under the CRS scheme, manufacturers must:
- Manufacture the product as per the applicable Indian Standard (IS code).
- Test product samples in a BIS-recognized laboratory located in India.
- Appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) if the manufacturer is based outside India.
- Label the product with the BIS CRS logo and R-number upon approval.
- Renew the registration periodically as per BIS guidelines.
